The Standard Chair SP is an updated variation on an early masterpiece by the French designer and engineer Jean Prouvé. Originally designed in 1934, the Standard Chair evolved into one of the most famous classics of the French 'constructeur'. The Standard SP (Siège en Plastique) builds a bridge from past to present, giving this iconic chair a contemporary look without altering its form: made of robust plastic, the seat surface and backrest of Standard SP come in a palette of colors designed to work in a range of interiors. The 8 options for the smooth finish powder-coated bases are inspired by Prouvé's original colors.
 
Chairs take the most stress on their back legs, where they bear the weight of the user's upper body. Architect, engineer and designer Prouvé incorporated this simple insight in his design for the Standard Chair: steel tubing suffices for the front legs since they are subject to less stress, the back legs are made of voluminous hollow steel sections that transfer most of the weight to the floor.
