ILLUMINATED SCULPTURE
Split Grain illuminated sculptures use light to reveal the elemental form and physical character of reclaimed wood.  Flowing out from the center, between each suspended slice, light traces intricate details and hidden beauty found in the contours of the wood.  Capturing beautiful patterns from all angles, these reductive and simplistic sculptures reveal nature through minimal form.

THIS PIECE
This piece is made from a reclaimed Redwood branch (see below for details about this wood) featuring an amazing red color in the center with a lighter streak up the sides from its early growth.  It has an incredible center area where a branch protruded that light up like a cavern from the lighting effect.  It has an many sharp contours and jutting knots that add to its dynamic shape.  The slices are spaced closely and light is forced out through the center by two LED lights within.  An integrated dimmer allows the lighting effect to be controlled for different ambient room settings.  The piece is completed with a felt base for scratch-free surface and connected via a 6 foot woven black cloth cord, in-line switch and 2 prong plug. 115v AC (also compatible with international voltages)

RECLAIMED WOOD
The wood for this piece came from a reclaimed California Coastal Redwood tree left behind by loggers in Mendocino County, CA.   Found along the Gualala River this area has been consistently logged since the 1850’s where Redwoods grow on a coastal range not far from the ocean.  The river provided a natural escape for the logs to the ocean for transportation before modern forestry equipment.  It is surprising that modern loggers leave behind so many smaller fallen trees.  Left to otherwise decay it was reclaimed for this artwork.  The intense dark red of the wood glows deep reddish-orange when lit from within the sculpture.
