ILLUMINATED SCULPTURE
This Split Grain illuminated sculpture reveals the elemental form and grain in a piece of reclaimed California Incense Cedar. Fascinating details and hidden beauty are revealed from light emitting from the center of the sculpture, flowing out from each individual slice suspended on a thin aluminum armature. The warm light traces the contours of the wood capturing beautiful patterns from all angles.

THIS PIECE
Made from a reclaimed California Coastal Monterey Cypress tree trunk (see below for details about this wood) it is a substantial tabletop piece with high-relief contours created by the artist's splitting technique. This piece's contours are accentuated with 3 sources of LED lighting within. The overall depth and shape is dramatic, making a statement of nature's beauty at every angle. From the side, the shape has a forward orientation mimicking the overall shape the tree takes from the relentless wind that dictates which direction it grows. It features a dimming control to create the perfect ambience for any room setting, a felt base for scratch-free surface and is connected via a 6 foot woven black cloth cord, in-line switch and 2 prong plug. 115v AC (also compatible with international voltages)

RECLAIMED WOOD

The wood for this piece is from a reclaimed California Coastal Monterey Cypress tree from hedgerows at The Sea Ranch, California. These hedgerows are rows of Cypress trees planted on the California coast starting in the early 1900’s as wind breaks.  Lawrence Halperin, landscape architect of the 1960’s Sea Ranch development, continued planting them as shelter for homes in this unique coastal development.  Cypress is a beautiful semi-hard wood that features many twists and dynamic growth patterns from the relentless force of wind along the ocean.  These hedgerows have a limited lifespan, often failing in coastal storms as they age.  This piece was created with reclaimed wood from a tree that was damaged in such a storm and felled due to its end of life cycle.
