Motomi Kawakami 'Seoto KD201' wood dining chair for Hida
For centuries, famed Hida artisans in Gifu prefecture have played a role in Japan's woodworking culture, crafting iconic bentwood furniture from sustainable local forests. Established in 1920, Hida Sangyo builds upon the Japanese heritage of craftsmanship and sustainability from their headquarters in Gifu, which remains one of Japan's leading furniture production areas. In addition to offering iconic designs from midcentury masters like Sori Yanagi and Enzo Mari, Hida produces contemporary creations from international designers such as Atsuhiko Misawa and atelier oï.
First introduced in 2011 by designer Motomi Kawakami, the Seoto series soon began collecting international design awards and recognition. Featuring a wide curved backrest, the chair's back remains supportive from a variety of seating angles. Coupled with the carved seat, the Seoto collection is pleasantly comfortable while promoting a healthy posture. Equally stylish as it is comfortable, the frame is crafted with a bentwood crosspiece beneath the seat. By providing an appropriate amount of space between the seat and the legs, the seat appears to float. Please note that the wood's grain, color and features vary from item to item due to the organic nature of the material.
